Exactly 30 years after the original Toy Story movie was released, launching Pixar as a major film company and bringing audiences to beloved figures like the cowboy doll (Tom Hanks) and the space ranger (Tim Allen), who are now famous worldwide.

Coming in 2026, the next chapter is set to arrive. The initial preview for Toy Story 5 appeared this week, offering a brief look into the storyline but leaving fans wondering how it will address the ending of Toy Story 4.

Bonnie's New Toy: A Digital Device Frightens the Gang

The preview reveals the young girl — who received Andy's toys when he left for college — getting a latest plaything, one that terrifies Woody, Buzz, and the crew. She gets her initial digital gadget, and she is thrilled about it.

Theoretically, the amphibian-inspired device will come to life just like the rest of her playthings. However, the toys seem to view it as a threat intending to supplant them, which it probably is.

The Cowboy's Comeback: Mysteries from Toy Story 4

An element the trailer doesn't touch on is why Woody is returned with his companions in Bonnie's room. The finale of Toy Story 4 saw him set off on a fresh journey with the shepherdess (Annie Potts), traveling with a fair and assisting giveaway items find good homes.

Certainly, the filmmakers will address the aftermath of Toy Story 4 in the film. Witnessing him appear in the familiar setting unexpectedly is somewhat puzzling, however. It also raises questions whether Bo Peep will have come back with him. And what about the stuntman toy (the star)?

Connections from the Last Installment

At the very least, some aspects are carrying over from the prior film. The final act Woody did before departing for his fresh path was pass his symbol of authority to the cowgirl (Joan Cusack), entrusting her as the leader of the toy domain. In the teaser displays the badge attached to her shirt.

Hopefully she is remains the key figure among the toys.
